Mayor Stoney Agrees To Meet RISC and VCORE
RISC and VCORE will meet with Mayor Stoney on August 29th to discuss implementing GVI in Richmond.
On Friday, July 14th, we, along with Richmonders Involved to Strengthen our Communities (RISC) sent a letter to Mayor Levar Stoney requesting a meeting to discuss gun violence and asking him to implement Group Violence Intervention (GVI) -- an evidence-based tool that has cut gun violence in half in cities across the country. The Mayor has refused to meet with RISC for the last three years. But, due to the power RISC has built, our alliance, and the unfortunate continued increase in gun violence, the Mayor has finally agreed to meet on Tuesday, August 29th with a small group of leaders from RISC and VCORE.
While this small group of leaders is meeting with Mayor Stoney, we will conduct a prayer vigil outside. We strongly encourage all community members to attend! Here are the details:
GUN VIOLENCE PRAYER VIGIL / PRESS CONFERENCE, DURING RISC / VCORE MEETING WITH MAYOR STONEY
Tuesday, August 29th
4:30 pm, at City Hall's East Marshall St. entrance
During this vigil, RISC will hold space to pray for a successful meeting, hear testimonies, pray for the hundreds of lives that have been lost to gun violence since we first proposed GVI to the Mayor in 2020, and end the evening with a press conference. We will likely conclude around 6:15pm.
It is important that we show the Mayor that we as a community are fed up with the gun violence in our city and want to see our leaders take steps to truly save lives. Sign up here if you can attend the Prayer Vigil/Press Conference. And make sure to invite your friends, neighbors, families, and congregations to this important event: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeaMQJku2XD9u_LdWOyOPEMDGs_UbtcumtWQkm4yygMFISoqg/viewform?pli=1
